Many products you use in your daily life may impact tiger habitats. By making informed shopping choices, you can reduce demand for products that drive habitat loss. The demand for palm oil—found in many common cleaning and bath products, cosmetics, and foods—threatens tiger habitats in countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia. In order to grow the palm trees that produce the oil, vast tracks of native forests that support tigers, their prey, and other endangered species are destroyed. You can help tigers, and many other species, by supporting companies that pledge to use sustainably harvested palm oil. How can you tell if the products you’re buying are palm oil friendly? In addition to products containing palm oil, many products such as printer/copy paper, toilet paper, furniture, houses, and more, are made from wood from large trees. Sadly, many of the trees in Asia’s forests are currently being removed faster than they can re-grow, resulting in deforestation. Deforestation leads to habitat loss for wild animals, such as tigers and their prey. Since it is unrealistic to completely stop the removal of trees from forests for human use, rewarding countries and companies that practice responsible forest management may be the best solution to reduce deforestation and minimize impacts on tigers. You can help by buying paper and wood products that have Forest Stewardship Council certification. Also look for paper products, including toilet paper, with a high percentage of post-consumer recycled content. Some items, such as furniture, you can also buy used.
